STOCKTON FOLK DANCE CAMP WINTER WEEKEND Jan 22-24

EXCITING NEWS!
Instead of making you wait all the way to July to enjoy the wonders of Stockton Folk Dance Camp, we’ve decided to assemble the usual cast of dynamic international dance stars and musicians to entertain, educate, and amuse you — via Zoom, of course.

We’ve finalized the faculty for a January online event with a mix of teachers who have taught at Stockton in previous years, as well as two teachers who will be part of our faculty for the first time. We welcome our first timers to the team: Bianca de Jong, teaching international dances and Polly Tapia Ferber teaching drumming for nonmusicians. They’ll be joined by familiar favorites Ahmet Luleci, Roberto Bagnoli, Aaron Alpert, Tineke van Geel, Maurits van Geel, Richard Powers, Tony Parkes, Gergana Panova, Vlasto Petkovski, Kay Munn, Miamon Miller, Michele Simon, Bill Cope, Janie Cowan, and Michael Lawson.

Click here to download the informational flyer. Spread the word! Forward it to your friends!

Don’t let the dates confuse you. This will be 24-hours-day, with both live and recorded presentations. The full schedule and details on the programming are coming soon!

4-weeks of Balkan dance with Steve Kotansky November

Balkan Dance with Steve Kotansky

Presented by the East European Folklife Center

The Class

Dancer and dance scholar Steve Kotansky will focus on “traditional” dances—dances as they are or were being done recently by various ethnic groups (rural and urban) from Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Western Bulgaria (i.e. Shope and Pirin). We will explore  simple, basic dances as well as more complex forms with a variety of mixed rhythms and tempi. Music recordings will range from zurla ensembles to izvoren/bitov (village instruments)  to čalgija (Ottoman-influcenced urban) and modern. The dances will be chosen from a repertoire as performed by village collectives as well as dances featured at weddings and other celebrations with minimal “choreography” or “arrangement.” We will take time to explore variations within the structural context and kinetic content of given regions. Steve will also be open to requests from participants. Recordings and dance descriptions will be posted to the class repertoire page during the week after each class.

The class is targeted to all levels of dancers, and beginners are welcome. The dances presented will range from beginner to intermediate in difficulty.

This event has a suggested fee of $15 for a single class, or $50 for the 4-class series. Anything you can give will be more than welcome, but if […]

Online Classes with Helene Eriksen & ANAR DANA Oct-Dec 2020

Dear friends,

ANAR DANA projects are still welcoming drop in visitors if you are a current or former member of ANAR DANA (if you aren’t but have dance experience you can contact me about the option of drop ins). This way you can dance with your dance sisters anywhere in the world and brush up on some topic you may have done yourself, or learn something you always wanted to.  To that end, in the calendar below I have listed which dances we will be working on on each day through the end of the year.  In the second half of December I will be taking a break to take care of my family. Drop-ins are $55 for one unit (ie one day including the Awaken Your Dancing Body! class of that day.)  We hope to see a lot of old faces and also give the current dancers the chance to meet their fellow dancers in other locales.

For those of you who were interested in the new workshop series on Music Mapping: I’m sorry I dropped the ball.  I have been overwhelmed with what I am doing at the moment.  BUT, I will […]

Dance at Home this Fall with Canada’s National Ballet School

We are excited to announce the launch of the six-week Baycrest NBS Sharing Dance Seniors – At Home class this Fall.

Bring dance into your home with 20-minute classes taught by NBS faculty and accompanied by a live musician. No experience is necessary, and classes are designed to be accessible for older adults with varied physical and cognitive abilities.

This Fall, we will be offering two exciting at-home dance options, one fully-seated class, and one class with seated and standing options. Sign up here, and you will be able to have access to a new class each week. Each class begins with a warm-up and moves through a set of dances where we encourage you to make artistic choices and move in the way that feels best for you.

If you have younger children in your life who may also enjoy the benefits of dancing at home, we are excited to announce the launch of NBS Kids – Dance On Demand, a comprehensive instructor-facilitated dance resource for kids. Click here or e-mail ac.bne-sbn@ssac.enna for more information.

Following in the footsteps of our late leader, Lucy Chang, Moveable Feet is staging a virtual version of her favorite event, the fundraiser for Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. We’ve tried to include as many of Lucy’s traditions as possible, although you will have to plan your own refreshments….

From her cottage in Inverness, Mel Harte will teach Hora de la Rezina (Theodor and Lia Vasilescu). From the East Bay, Jane and Frank Tripi will demonstrate some Schottische variations. Loui Tucker will tell us about her volunteer work at Second Harvest.

And our outstanding dance team from the Bay Area and beyond will be leading dances old and new, including many of Lucy’s favorites. Leaders include: Adony Beniares, Kevin Greek, Alicia LaFetra, Richard Graham, Marina Troost, Lon Radin, and Cricket Rayburn (Oregon).

Thanks to generous early contributors, we have already exceeded last year’s food bank donations!
But more is even better! If you haven’t yet had a chance to support this […]
