Tuesday Night Revival Balkan Dance Workshop Dec 26

This Saturday, December 26, in the afternoon from 4 to 6 pm ET, we’ll have a dance workshop, with teaching by some of our own dance leaders, organized by Barbara Gottfried. The tentative list of dances to be taught is Beranče from Demir Hisar, Čičovata, Deninka, Gilanka, Jambolsko Pajduško #2, Šetnala se Mitro, Oj Ti Momče Ohriǵanče, and Žensko Pušteno. Some of these are dances already in our repertoire that need review; others have been taught recently in online workshops. I’ll send out a final list with more information about these dances, and I’ll also send out the program for the dance later.

At the end of the dance on Saturday we are going to try something new: breaking up into breakout rooms for our after-party chat. (Henry is organizing this.)

Later that same day, Saturday, December 26, will be our 14th Annual Holiday Party, programmed by Paula Rosenstock, from 8 to 11 pm ET.

The URL for both workshop and party is https://tinyurl.com/tnrzoom.

You can also find this URL on our web page, https://tuesdaynightrevival.com. If you forget the link and don’t remember the URL for our web page, just search for “Tuesday Night Revival Balkan”.

Tuesday Night Revival Balkan Dancing Saturdays

Until we can meet in person again, we will have a series of online dances. They are currently every three weeks at 8 pm on Saturday night. While the weather allows outdoor dancing, we will also be holding occasional masked and socially distanced outdoor dances.

You can join our online dances through Zoom at the URL https://tinyurl.com/tnrzoom.

(The meeting ID is 99176986857, with no password.)

We now have a Google Docs spreadsheet for requests at https://tinyurl.com/TNR-requests.

Tuesday Night Revival is a series of Balkan dances, aimed at experienced dancers. Our repertoire and our name come from the old MIT Folk Dance Club Tuesday night Balkan dances which were held from around 1965 to the late 1990s but our dances are now on Saturday.

Friday Night L.I.F.E. Hosting Steve Kotansky Nov 6

Friday Night L.I.F.E. virtual teaching/dancing session (continuing since 3/27/20). This is week 32 of our online adventures!
Time: Friday 08:00-10:00 PM Pacific Time (US & Canada) every week, until we return home to LA Dancefit!

****On November 6th, L.I.F.E. Balkan Dancers are excited to host a special dance workshop with Master Dance teacher and scholar Steve Kotansky during our session. Steve is returning after leading a wonderful set of dances for us in October. This time he will be teaching from his vast repertoire of dances from Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Hungary.

Sherry Cochran, along with Tom Bozigian and Sheree King, Asako Oshiro, Joan Hantman (our house crew) will be leading very short sets of your diverse requests after the workshop.

This week we will open the room at 7:45pm with some warm-up dances. Steve will start teaching at approximately 8:05pm.

Tom and Sheree had a stellar workshop on October 23rd teaching Daronee 1-6 and have made available a Digital Download of the Daronee Suite of 6 parts (with vocals by the original Armenian State Song & Dance Ensemble) that he recorded live in the fall of 1974. There is also a newer recording of Daronee (no singing) on Songs and Dances […]

4-weeks of Balkan dance with Steve Kotansky November

Balkan Dance with Steve Kotansky

Presented by the East European Folklife Center

The Class

Dancer and dance scholar Steve Kotansky will focus on “traditional” dances—dances as they are or were being done recently by various ethnic groups (rural and urban) from Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Western Bulgaria (i.e. Shope and Pirin). We will explore  simple, basic dances as well as more complex forms with a variety of mixed rhythms and tempi. Music recordings will range from zurla ensembles to izvoren/bitov (village instruments)  to čalgija (Ottoman-influcenced urban) and modern. The dances will be chosen from a repertoire as performed by village collectives as well as dances featured at weddings and other celebrations with minimal “choreography” or “arrangement.” We will take time to explore variations within the structural context and kinetic content of given regions. Steve will also be open to requests from participants. Recordings and dance descriptions will be posted to the class repertoire page during the week after each class.

The class is targeted to all levels of dancers, and beginners are welcome. The dances presented will range from beginner to intermediate in difficulty.

This event has a suggested fee of $15 for a single class, or $50 for the 4-class series. Anything you can give will be more than welcome, but if […]
